Stairway to Heaven Lyrics and Song Meaning Analysis

Stairway to Heaven Lyrics and Song Meaning Analysis explains why this is such a memorable lyric. Led Zeppelin lyrics are classic but Stairway to Heaven is special.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote this masterpiece while spending time at Bron-Yr-Aur, a cottage in Wales, in 1970. The song is broken into three major sections called a suite. Each section is more brilliant then the next.

Robert Plant wrote the the Stairway to Heaven lyrics and melody as he listened to John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Page rehearse the music. He had been reading Lewis Spence's Magic Arts in Celtic Britain.

Plant's explanation of the lyric is that it is about a woman who gets everything she wants in life, takes it for granted and gives nothing back in return. I think there is a lot more going on, however!

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN LYRICS

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold

And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll

And she's buying a stairway to heaven

Stairway to Heaven song meaning

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN LYRICS & SONG MEANING ANALYSIS
(memorable title that states the main message of the song)

Many believe the Stairway to Heaven lyrics are about the juxtaposition of good versus evil. The decision to follow the Catholic church or the occult. One could argue that it is faith/religion versus science.

Do you follow what has been fed to you in church and religion or do you follow logic and science and think for yourself and come to your own conclusions bout the universe?

SECTION 1 - There is no specific rhyming pattern. There are very few rhymes, yet the phrases flow effortlessly. This section is about a woman who gets whatever she wants whenever she wants it.

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold (imperfect rhyme)
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed (perfect rhyme)
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven

In this part she begins to question herself and her belief.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure (no rhyme)
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings (alliteration)
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven (imperfect rhyme)
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

SECTION 2 - The rhyming pattern really begins here. The voice goes from 3rd person (she) to 1st person (I). The woman is now speaking. She is becoming prophetic.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west (close to perfect rhyme)
And my spirit is crying for leaving (looking to leave Western religion and belief systems)
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees (close to perfect rhyme - Revelation of Jesus Christ))
And the voices of those who stand looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder

Notice how the perspective now expands to "we" and "us". She is now speaking to all of us.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune (perfect rhyme)
Then the piper will lead us to reason (The piper is science or some would believe, the occult)
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long (imperfect rhyme)
And the forests will echo with laughter

In this part John Bonham's drums enter to lift the song! The perspective switches to 2nd person (you).

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen (a reference to the Lord of the Rings)
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on (Stairway to Heaven or Highway to Hell?)
And it makes me wonder

Your head is humming (alliteration) and it won't go, in case you don't know (perfect rhyme - lyric implies confusion about this new found freedom)
The piper's calling you to join him (science or the occult)
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind? (alliteration)

SECTION 3 - This is the climax of the song just after Page's guitar solo!

And as we wind on down the road (as we move through life)
Our shadows taller than our soul (science, things of this world, the occult are all more significant than religion)
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold (the lady still believes she can have everything she wants since now she believes in science and no longer relies on religion)

And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last (if you listen to your heart you will realize that life is a thing of science)
When all are one and one is all, yeah (humanity is all in this together)
To be a rock and not to roll (you are the immovable rock of your life, your life is not predestined, you have control over everything that happens to you, you pass through once)

And she's buying a stairway to heaven
