Berklee College of Music / Music Business Schools

One of the best music business schools in the world is the Berklee College of Music. In addition, it's not only the best audio engineering school but the Berklee School of Music is one of the best music production schools.

Berklee dominates the music industry. Below is my story as well as examples of successful alumni and online course opportunities!

I attended the Berklee College of Music from 1987-1991 and it was the perfect place for me. I attained a Bachelor of Music with a major in Songwriting. My principal instrument was guitar.

Soon after graduating I was signed to an independent record label. Due to my education there, I was then certified to teach music in the Boston Public School system which I have done for 20 years. In addition, I have licensed songs to television for almost 10 years now.

I continue to make a good living from music and it's all because I went to Berklee!

As a kid I always sang. I played the piano in 4th and 5th grades. I quickly switched to guitar in 6th grade. It was clear to me that I loved making up songs (although not very good at the time).

In high school I had an acoustic rock band called Pyramid Rose and we won the battle of the bands singing Crosby, Stills and Nash, Grateful Dead, Neil Young and America songs.

It's what I loved to do, but I ended up in a traditional liberal arts program at the University of New Hampshire(UNH). A friend of mine had decided to go to Berklee and I went to visit him as I had heard it was an excellent performing arts school as well as one of the top music business schools. My entire life changed that weekend.

I withdrew from UNH, started taking guitar and theory lessons again and applied to Berklee. It was a life changing decision! The school fit me like a glove. I was around like minded people. Folks who had some talent and drive, but needed to learn the incredible language of music.

Berklee is an accredited college that if you are looking to get a bachelor's degree, requires that you take a number of non-music humanities ie., English, history, art appreciation etc.

You can also receive a diploma and skip all of the liberal arts courses if that's what you want. I wanted to have a degree because I knew I eventually wanted to go to graduate school.

If you don't want to enroll but want the benefit of the curriculum, click any banner or image on this page or sign up for Berklee's free newsletter and view the wide range of online courses you can take.

In addition, the music curriculum is rigorous. I am ten times the musician I was before attending. Why? Here are the basic building blocks of a Berklee education(top music business schools).

You learn that harmony is the relationship between all of the notes and the chords they build. You learn how all of these chords fit together into interesting patterns and progressions. You learn about key signatures and how to analyze chord progressions. You also begin to understand why certain progressions you may have invented organically, work so well.

Harmony is music theory from the most basic elements to incredibly advanced concepts. When you understand harmony, you have the ability to speak a very special language and you can communicate with other trained musicians from all over the world.

Arranging is how all of the different instruments and vocals interact and blend with one another. I learned how to build an interesting pop/rock arrangement in a variety of different genres. Arranging also has a lot to do with musical dynamics. I had the opportunity to write for, and play, in multiple ensembles.

Ear Training
Ear training is perhaps the most important thing I learned at Berklee. Not only gaining the ability to site sing, but also to transcribe what I heard in music. An example of this would be if you wanted to figure out a song you loved. You would first figure out some bass notes in the song. This would lead to the scale used in the song, which would lead to the key you were in. Well, since you had taken your harmony classes, you would be able to figure out what chords are built above those bass notes.

Ear training has all kinds of practical purposes from developing your ability to sing background vocals to figuring out parts, rhythms and pitches on your instrument. This also makes it much easier to learn new instruments and to try your hand at being a lead singer.

A solid foundation in harmony, arranging and ear training allows you to work much faster and opens up so many more possibilities as a songwriter, composer and performer.

I studied songwriting with Jimmy Kachulis and Jack Perricone and we analyzed all kinds of pop, rock, R&B and country tunes. We were able to break them down and see what made them work from the melody to the harmony to the overall arrangement. Great stuff! What a blast!

Lyric Writing
Pat Pattison is known world wide for his effectiveness in teaching lyric writing and all of the techniques good writers use. Again, we analyzed the greats and tried to emulate certain aspects of what these writers do. I am a much better writer because of this guy!

Home Recording
I had courses on how to record and how to build a multi-track arrangement using my own songs. Nowadays, Berklee teaches all the latest software such as Pro Tools Software, Cakewalk, Logic and Cubase.

They are constantly on the cutting edge of technology and the music industry looks to Berklee, also one of the top music business schools,  for innovation. It's why Berklee is the top audio engineering school, one of the top music production schools and music business schools world wide.

Songwriter Jeff Bhasker '99 won the Best Rap Song award for "All of the Lights" by Kanye West, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, and Fergie.

Composing and Producing Electronic Music

Once I graduated from Berklee I spent the next five years playing the Boston and New England circuit. I had performances in NYC as well as overseas. I self-released my first CD in 1995 which led to my being signed to AMG Records in 1999. I recorded and mixed "Can't Disguise" at Electric Lady Studios (Zeppelin, Hendrix, U2, AC/DC) in NYC with Jonathan Seymour (Santana, Dave Matthews, Vertical Horizon etc.)

I have been licensing songs to television and media for the past 10 years.

I was connected to an incredible group of musicians through Berklee which made all of this possible. I learned an incredible amount about audio production and that was years before all of these online engineering courses were available.

Berklee may be most famous for being an audio engineering school and the amount of successful engineers and producers it develops. Below are some recent grammy nominations:

Engineer Miles Walker '04 was nominated for his work on Katy Perry's Firework, up for the top Grammy Award, Record of the Year, and he was nominated for his work on Rihanna's Loud, which was up for Album of the Year. Fellow engineer Jeffrey Villanueva '07 along with producer Makeba Riddick '99 are also up for Album of the Year for their work on Loud. A fourth Berklee alumnus, engineer Thomas Ware '91, is also nominated for Album of the Year for his work on Lady Gaga's Born This Way. Two Berklee alumni are nominated for Song of the Year. Songwriter Claude Kelly's '02 work on Bruno Mars's hit Grenade earned him the nomination, while songwriter Jeff Bhasker '99 is nominated for writing Kanye West, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, and Fergie's hit All of the Lights. Kelly and Bhasker are each nominated for additional awards: Best R&B Song and Best Rap Song respectively and attended the best of music business schools.
