Hotel California Lyrics and Song Meaning Analysis

Hotel California Lyrics and Song Meaning Analysis can help us learn how to write song lyrics. Eagles lyrics are amazing, but this is one the greatest of all time!

Hotel California was released as a single in February 1977 and is one of the best-known songs of all time. Writing credits for the song are split between Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey.

Don Henley sings lead vocals on the original recording and the song ends with an extended section of electric guitar interplay between Felder and Joe Walsh.

The song has many interpretations by fans and critics alike, but the Eagles have describe the lyrics as their experience of the high life in Los Angeles. The lyrics are symbolic of a world of excess that one cannot escape once they have entered.

Things seem amazing at first, but the overabundance of sex, drugs, money, food, rock and roll and the excess of the American Dream can be the undoing of many.

In the end, many want to escape, but there is no going back once you have joined the party at the Hotel California.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA LYRICS

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain, "Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine"
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "

HOTEL CALIFORNIA LYRICS and SONG MEANING ANALYSIS

The rhyme scheme throughout the song is simply AABB.

VERSE 1
The temptation begins. You are becoming famous and/or wealthy and living in LA. You are lured by the world of decadence.

On a dark desert (alliteration) highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas (Mexican slang for the buds of cannabis plants), rising up through the air (perfect rhyme)
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night (perfect rhyme)

VERSE 2
As the beautiful maid beckons you, you know this is a world of both heaven and hell.

There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell" (perfect rhyme)
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...(perfect rhyme)

CHORUS
Welcome to the land of no return.

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face (perfect rhyme)
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here (perfect rhyme)

VERSE 3
She has all the material things she ever wants and all the boy toys she ever needs.

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends (perfect rhyme)
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.

Some dance to remember, some dance to forget (One of my favorite lines EVER! (perfect rhyme)

VERSE 4
Invoking the spirits of the free love 60s...

So I called up the Captain, "Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine" (perfect rhyme)
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...(perfect rhyme)

CHORUS
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face (perfect rhyme)
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis (perfect rhyme)

VERSE 5
Endless excess, we want to leave as we feel our souls slipping away, but the temptations of the flesh and material treasures are too addictive to turn away from.

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device" (perfect rhyme)
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely (a nod to Steely Dan - alliteration) knives, but they just can't kill the beast (perfect rhyme)

VERSE 6
We realize this is the pathway to hell, yet we are experiencing what happened to Robert Johnson at the Crossroads. Our souls are falling into the abyss, but there is no way out as we have traded our souls for the American Dream of excess.

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before (perfect rhyme)
"Relax, " said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! " (perfect rhyme)
